The American Institute for Cancer Research and Central Recovery Press are pleased to offer Starved: A Nutrition Doctor’s Journey from Empty to Full (paperback) by Anne McTiernan, MD, PhD. Dr. McTiernan is a Full Member at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center and Research Professor at the University of Washington Schools of Medicine and Public Health. She is a member of the Expert Panel for the AICR/WCRF Continuous Update Project and served on the scientific program committee for the 25^th AICR Research Conference.

Set in working-class, Irish-American Boston of the fifties and sixties, Starved is a gripping and inspirational coming-of-age story. At the young age of four, Anne McTiernan was left by her mother at a Catholic boarding school where she emotionally and physically starved. After a doctor forced Anne's mother to bring her home, she used physical and verbal abuse to take out her frustrations on a defenseless little girl. Anne transitions from a malnourished state to binge eating to obesity. At age fifteen without the love and support from her family, Anne is forced to take full responsibility for her own life through hard work, undaunted intelligence, and persistence.

Today as a leading doctor and researcher on obesity and health, Anne has helped thousands of women improve their relationship with food, but this is not their story. Starved is the story of how Anne helped herself and turned the adversity she encountered as a child into a strength and set of skills that would later help her meet the demands of her career.
